Michael David Johnson was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a child he always wanted to be an actor and director, constantly geeking out on special features of films. As an early teen, he got involved with choral and drama programs, ROP Video Production courses, wrote a section for the local newspaper and also began singing and playing live and in the studio with local rock acts. During high school he also got to try his hand at directing a short play, as well as co-editing the yearbook publication. The culmination of these experiences, along with with his passion for artistic and technical endeavors, eventually led him to the BECA (Broadcast Electronic Communication Arts) program at San Francisco State University. At SFSU, Michael advanced his technical skills in both visual and audio productions. He helped produce events and live shows and was Vice President of the CSB (College Student in Broadcasting), a student ran organization that worked with the head of the BECA Department to put on larger department productions and weekly meetings for students to network and meet with alumni pursuing careers in the field. It was during this time that Michael became more and more passionate about audio production and engineering, winning awards in mixing and sound design of a documentary (Activist State), producing a weekly radio show, and running audio on a weekly student news broadcast.
In 2010, post college graduation, Michael took some time to travel (SE Asia & Europe) and delve deeper into his other developing his artistic passions. For the next 4 1/2 years, he played and co-managed two bands and worked in music recording studios and music venues. Simultaneously, he also took freelance work in all fields production related. As a production sound engineer he worked with the Academy of Art College, local music acts, independent TV/film producers and shows such as IGN’s Next Game Boss and Radiant Atmospheres: A Documentary. As a freelance production artist and technical assistant for live event productions, he gained experiences in everything from stage management, artist relations, set/stage design to art construction and administrative work.
Ripe with experiences, and finally ready to leave the Bay Area, in January of 2015 Michael moved to Los Angeles to focus all of his energies on production sound for film and TV. Since then Michael has been a full-time freelancer in Production Sound and Post Audio for projects in film, TV, commercial and documentary works.
